Unibail-Rodamco's performance is regularly assessed by analysts, researchers, investors and third-party certification bodies. They provide useful analysis of the Group’s activities and valuable feedback on areas where its performance can be improved. Unibail-Rodamco is often identified as one of the most sustainable companies in the commercial real estate sector.

Socially responsible investment (SRI) indexes

Unibail-Rodamco is listed on several prestigious SRI indexes:

  • FTSE4Good (since 2005): the FTSE4Good Index Series is made up of companies that meet globally recognised corporate responsibility standards.
  • Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (World since 2008; Europe since 2010): the DJSI are global indexes tracking the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. Unibail-Rodamco has improved its score in each annual assessment and scored 75 in 2011.
  • Advanced Sustainability Performance Eurozone Index (since 2010): the ASPI Eurozone® tracks the financial performance of companies in the Eurozone that are leaders in sustainability.
  • Ethibel Sustainability Index (since 2011): the ESI Excellence Europe includes companies that show a better than average performance in terms of corporate sustainability and responsibility in their sector. “Unibail-Rodamco has been selected for inclusion in the Ethibel Excellence Investment Register since 13/23/2011 and is being monitored regarding its CSR profile since then.”
  • STOXX® Global ESG Leaders Index (since 2011): the STOXX Global ESG Leaders index is composed of the leading global companies in terms of environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria. Unibail-Rodamco is a member of all three sub-indexes.
  • ECPI Index (since 2011): ECPI is a leading Rating and Index company dedicated to ESG Research (Environmental, Social and Governance). Unibail-Rodamco has been selected for inclusion in the following ECPI® Indices: ECPI Developed Ethical+ Equity, ECPI European Top 10 ECO Real Estate Equity, ECPI Ethical EMU Equity, ECPI Global Eco Real Estate and Building Equity.

Awards and recognition

The Group has been recognised through the following awards and rankings:

  • The Unibail-Rodamco 2012 Annual Report received two EPRA Gold Awards for the application of Best Practices Recommendations for financial and sustainability reporting in the European listed real estate sector.
  • GRESB (Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark). Unibail-Rodamco is named a GRESB “Regional Sector Leader” in 2013. This annual survey, conducted by the University of Maastricht, measures the environmental and social performance of real estate companies and funds.
  • Governance of CAC40 companies. Unibail-Rodamco is ranked 1st in France in 2013. This study, conducted by Proxinvest, assessed the governance of companies in the French CAC40.
  • Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World. Unibail-Rodamco is ranked 47th in the 2011 list.
    This survey, conducted by Corporate Knights, highlights the global corporations which have been most proactive in managing environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues during the year.
  • World’s Most Ethical Companies 2011. Unibail-Rodamco was one of only two French companies out of the 110 companies that featured in the 2011 ranking.
    This ranking, conducted by Ethisphere, recognises companies that translate words about doing business “ethically” into action and have leading ethics and compliance programmes, particularly as compared to their industry peers.
  • Novethic Barometer. Unibail-Rodamco is ranked 2nd in the 2011 barometer.
    This annual ranking assesses the environmental performance of buildings owned and managed by French real estate companies.
  • JP Morgan Cazenove study of the sustainability performance of 44 European real estate companies. This study conducted by JP Morgan Cazenove and published in September 2011, ranks Unibail-Rodamco in 1st position.
  • "Best Employer for Women". The leading French business magazine Challenges, placed Unibail-Rodamco 4th among French CAC 40 companies in its "Best Employer for Women" ranking.
  • Universum. Young graduates from leading business and engeneering schools, ranked Unibail-Rodamco number 1 in France for the “Hight level of responsibility offered to recently-hired young graduates”.

Voluntary charters and frameworks

Unibail-Rodamco supports a number of voluntary charters and frameworks, including:

  • the United Nations Global Compact. The Group has been a signatory since 2004 and is committed to respecting and implementing the principles of the Global Compact in all of its activities.
  • the Afep-Medef Corporate Governance Code. Unibail-Rodamco adheres to all of the best practice recommendations of this French charter.
  • the Carbon Disclosure Project. Unibail-Rodamco has chosen to participate this environmental transparency exercise since 2009.

Environmental certification

Unibail-Rodamco seeks BREEAM certification for all of its new developments and extensions of more than 10,000 m2. BREEAM is the world's most widely used sustainable construction certification.

Unibail-Rodamco aims to achieve a rating of Very Good or better for projects delivered from 2011 onwards. The Docks 76 project was the first shopping centre in Europe to receive BREEAM certification. Since then, its teams have achieved a number of other "firsts":

In 2011, the Group extended its environmental certification policy to existing managed assets. Unibail-Rodamco aims to obtain a BREEAM-In-Use certification for all its shopping centres in 2014. In 2011, four BREEAM-In-Use certificates were obtained for major managed shopping centres.

Unibail-Rodamco also applies for national certification when relevant. For example, HQE certification is often sought for French projects. HQE is the French standard certification scheme for sustainable construction. In 2010, the new hall at Paris-Nord Villepinte in France became the first convention and exhibition building to be constructed to HQE standards.

All 14 of the Group's managed shopping centres in Spain have an ISO 14001 certification.
